Valley International Airport (IATA: HRL, ICAO: KHRL, FAA LID: HRL) is a city owned, public use airport located three nautical miles (6 km) northeast of the central business district of Harlingen, a city in Cameron County, Texas, United States. Also known as Rio Grande Valley International Airport, it is the second busiest commercial airport in the Rio Grande Valley in terms of passengers.
It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a primary commercial service airport. As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 417,557 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008, 367,269 enplanements in 2009, and 373,438 in 2010.
VALLEY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HISTORY
After the airport’s closure by the military, it was turned over to the local government and the facilities were converted to civilian use as Valley International Airport after Hurricane Beulah significantly flooded the original Harlingen civilian airport in 1967.
